I am venturing in new and unexplored territory in a search for a correct and clean 1884 trapdoor. I choose 1884 from the other models because I want the rod bayonet and Buffington sight. Maybe I need a book? At this point, perusing Gun Broker, I am confused. Taking a time out to study up. So many questions.
How do I identify an actual 1884. Can I trust the 1884 date on the trapdoor or is it based on serial number? If so; are serial numbers online? About 1/2 the 1884 on gun broker do not have a rod bayonet. Are those restocked or were some made that way? The locks are not dated. Can the proper lock be identified from replacement from other models?
I want to shoot occasionally with black powder. Do I need head space gauges or is there some looseness in the trap door to look for?
I appreciate any tips of what to look for and how to evaluate condition for safe and reasonably accurate shooting. What ever passes for accurate in a trap door. I do not want a mixed parts gun. Honest wear is fine.
Have an opportunity to purchase this and neither myself or the buyer know much about it. Family friend (widow) liquidating her husbands old collection. We both know its old but not much more. Even if I dont buy it want to make sure she doesnt get robbed.
Here's what I think it is:
Make: Springfield
Model: 1878 Trapdoor
Serial Number: 373856
Year of Manufacture: 1889-1990
Caliber: 45-70 Government.
Action Type: Single Shot Trapdoor
Has this cool bayonet with US plate (but not sure its original). 'US' font doesnt look right (aftermarket?)
VP insignia on barrel.
Anything I can pull of of it determine more about it or sense of worth?
Thanks everyone.
What is the value of an 1884 Springfield trapdoor with serial number 291526? I can say that the age of your 1898 30-40 krag springfield serial number 382538 was produced by springfield armory.
